My client, who operates in the food tech space, is a social enterprise that addresses the serious issue of food insecurity locally in Ghana and across the West and Central African regions through the production and supply of edible insects as a nutritious source of protein, minerals, and vitamins. With emphasis on sustainable farming methods, deforestation, and their resource-efficient production processes they are justifiably proud of their heritage and popularity. They are now in the process of scaling up their business to the next level to a structured and managed plan of expansion. Developing their production rapidly, co-developing packaged products, and taking advantage of export opportunities to other West African countries whilst also advancing research into their product line, my client is seeking a very specific person to fill the position of Director of Sales and Marketing – a role that is pivotal to their growing organisation.

I am looking for an outstanding individual that can demonstrate passion and commitment, is highly energetic and motivated, adaptable, and versatile, and is a proven strategic business leader from an organizational sales background. Driving maximum-level sales growth, directing the sales strategy for short and long-term yield increases, and building and managing the sales and marketing teams are just a few aspects that the position will demand of the successful candidate.


With the support of their team, the Director of Sales and Marketing will:

  • Design, execute and be responsible for the management of the company’s sales division.
  • Plan the immediate-, short-, medium-, and long-term sale’s activities and performance.
  • Possess a developed understanding of the Ghana and West/Central African market and the business environment, and quickly become fully conversant with the company’s products, philosophy, and culture.
  • Advise on and develop current and future product development and processing needs.
  • Analyse data on a regular basis, keep abreast of market trends and changes, apply critical thinking at all times in order to achieve high sales growth month-on-month.
  • Intimately understand the interdependence of departments, the importance of inter-office communication, and be able to work seamlessly with other departments to establish efficient distribution, sales, collections and marketing initiatives, performance, and results.
  • Uphold, maintain, and contribute to a positive, collaborative, and creative working environment, and help lead an innovative and conscientious company that has a vision, a plan and a purpose.

In addition, the role demands:

  • Full responsibility for the company’s sales strategy.
  • Product development on a commercial scale for African and global markets.
  • Market intelligence.
  • Increasing B2C and B2B sales, identifying new sales channels and opportunities, developing distribution strategies, and implementing improvements to existing practices.
  • Establishing KPIs, with focus on volume and revenue, collaborating on pricing strategy, and overseeing inventory and reconciliation.
  • Monitoring and managing reports on sales performance, forecasting and individual performances, handling all outsourced sales & marketing activities, and building a professional network of clients and prospects.
  • To be the active and chief lead in all prospecting for new business (through traditional and digital means), sales initiatives, pitches, presentations, and negotiations while constantly providing ongoing training and support, and seeking always to convert small prospects into big clients.
  • Create, plan, optimize & oversee the implementation of marketing activities across all platforms – digital, mass media, experiential, trade, etc., and ensure synergy across marketing platforms, and be fully responsible for preparing and executing market penetration via all forms of media, events, outlets, Points-of-Sale, etc., and targeted marketing campaigns.
  • Develop and maintain in-house policy and procedure for “best-in-class” Customer and Client Care.
  • Liaise, train, and educate the sales team, field sales reps, retailers and wholesalers to attain better results, and boost morale for achieving increased sales volume (employee incentive programs, targets and bonuses, etc).

The successful applicant MUST possess the following ESSENTIAL criteria to be considered for this role. Please do NOT apply if you don’t meet ALL of them:

  • A minimum of 10 years’ experience in sales strategy and leadership, 8 of which at progressive team management level and across more than one channel.
  • A verifiable record of high sales growth, preferably within a niche or novel market.
  • High level of experience managing and building customer relationships and a mature understanding of the principals of Customer Support.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills with good all-round working ability in Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Proven ability to create, implement and execute sales strategies in line with company growth, in a constantly evolving sector, changing market conditions and in an often fast-paced environment: To be proactive and resourceful, flexible but disciplined.
  • You will be adaptable to circumstances, familiar with life in West Africa, comfortable with challenge, most at home in a dynamic and developing business, and have a natural affinity with, and compassion for, people, culture, and their differences.
